Heavy downpours to washout Britain for the rest of the week amid 45mph gales

More heavy showers are set to washout Britain through the rest of the week with dozens of flood alerts in place today.

Temperatures are also set to dip, with many areas struggling to remain in double digits – while 45mph winds are on the cards in the coming days.

A fresh area of rain is quickly moving into the UK and is set to strike Devon, Cornwall and South Wales by Wednesday evening before spreading across Northern Ireland and England overnight.

There’s uncertainty about how far north it will spread but low pressure will keep the showers consistent across Thursday before more weather fronts replace it – meaning a deluge of rain for Friday and Saturday.

The Environment Agency has issued five flood warnings and 36 alerts for England on Wednesday, while Natural Resources Wales has put four alerts in place.

Met Office forecaster Alex Deakin said the rest of the week will be characterised by “more heavy showers…and always staying on the cool side”, adding overnight temperatures could drop as low as 6C.

Referring to the area of rain moving in tonight, he said: “It could be quite heavy in places and after such a wet spell over the weekend, we do need to watch this area of rain.

“This area of low pressure, because that’s what it is, moving in and sticking around for the first part of Thursday.

“Some uncertainty about how far north it gets and quickly it clears but it’s only replaced then by another area of low pressure – more weather fronts springing, plenty of showers through Friday and into Saturday.”

He went on to say there is some high pressure “trying to move in” which could mean a drier day for Sunday.

Before tonight, Wednesday will also be largely “fine and dry”, added Mr Deakin, pointing to temperatures as high as 17C in the southeast.
